Laundry codename for Bennington Ross1, an American OSPR2 officer serving in London and later Nuremburg during and after the Second World War. Ross returned to the U.S. in 1946 and returned to his pre-war employment as a historian. In 1956, he was the first American source recruited by the Laundry as part of Operation RAMSES. Ross was hired by the Black Chamber in 1959, after which he continued to pass information to the Laundry. Ross’ actions were discovered by the Black Chamber in 1964 and he was used as bait to catch his handler and other Laundry officers. Based on debriefings, Ross was believed to have been killed by the Black Chamber in an extra-judicial execution, although he was later reported seen in Taipei in 1972.
