Operation MOONLIGHT SPARK was a World War II effort directed at identifying occult practitioners & assets in Eastern Europe. MOONLIGHT didn't get started until after Hitler began Operation_Barbarossa. The operation was run out of the British Embassy in Moscow and was mostly unsuccessful. The Russians suspected (with some justification) that SOE staff in Moscow were keen to organize anti-Soviet partisan groups, and rarely gave British intelligence agents any freedom to operate. The few agents who managed to forge a working relationship with the host nation were later suspected by their home agencies of being “too cozy” with the Russians. The Laundry came out of the war years with no clearer view of the Soviet Union's OCCINTEL capabilities than they had in 1935, when Harold Lyman authored the GAMESMAN report.
