The Godzilla Threshold
The Godzilla Threshold1 is simply the line past which a situation which has gotten so bad that the act of summoning Godzilla, the King of Monsters - or doing something equally horrific and seemingly self-destructive - actually seems like a rational response.
As our world inexorably enters the NIGHTMARE interval, the Laundry is re-examining a lot of worst-case scenarios and "unthinkable" contingencies, measuring them against some very finely-calibrated Godzilla Thresholds.
