BROTHERHOOD was the Laundry codename for the Joint US/UK Occult Assets Task Force, which operated from 1942 until 1960. The cooperation enshrined under BROTHERHOOD was far from perfect even from the start, and eventually broke down for a number of reasons – the CIA was furious that British intelligence had been harboring several highly-placed Soviet moles, the Americans never got over the SOE’s pre-emptive actions in Operation CHAR, and the Laundry disagreed violently with the cavalier attitude that the Black Chamber showed towards the dangers of computational demonology. In the end, it was the US which refused to extend the UK-USA Security Agreement to cover OCCINTEL, and the rift has become permanent over the last 50+ years.
